The fonts bundled with CorelDraw are no longer in the proprietary Corel format WFN, but in Type 1 PostScript fonts and TTF TrueType formats. CorelDraw for Unix also became available. The inclusion of this software was the precedent for the actual graphic suites. The inclusion of TrueType in Windows 3.1 transformed CorelDraw into a serious illustration program capable of using system-installed outline fonts without requiring third-party software such as Adobe Type Manager paired with a photo-editing program (Corel Photo-Paint), a font manager and several other pieces of software, it was also part of the first all-in-one graphics suite. CorelDraw 3.0 came into its own with Microsoft's release of Windows 3.1. CorelDraw 1.x and 2.x ran under Windows 2.x and 3.0. That program, CorelDraw, was initially released in 1989. In 1987, Corel engineers Michel Bouillon and Pat Beirne undertook to develop a vector-based illustration program to bundle with their desktop publishing systems.
Both tools work across various platforms and have features that make the software more accessible to its users, and therefore, more convenient. Overall, Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW tie for compatibility. Some features from either app don't carry over, so it's not worth the hassle. If you want Adobe Illustrator to open a CorelDRAW file, you have to export it as an Illustrator file and then open it in Illustrator. There is a workaround for that, but it isn't the most seamless process. CorelDRAW can import and export Illustrator files, while Illustrator doesn't support CorelDRAW files.
What gives CorelDRAW a slight edge is that it's compatible with Adobe Illustrator. You can also edit or comment on a coworker's project, all without having to download the software. It's an online application that lets you access and edit your work. Apart from that, CorelDRAW also offers the CorelDRAW.app. CorelDRAW also has an iPad application, though if you look at its ratings, they're relatively low.
